AI and Computer Vision Applications in Smart Cities for Enhanced Security and Traffic Management

Abstract The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Vision (CV) technologies has played a transformative role in shaping the development of smart cities worldwide. Among the most impactful applications are those related to traffic management and urban security—two domains that are critical to urban efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This paper explores the integration of AI and CV systems in smart city infrastructures, analyzing their contributions to optimizing vehicular traffic, improving parking systems, and enhancing public safety through intelligent surveillance and predictive analytics. Through a comprehensive review of recent literature and an analysis of contemporary implementations, the paper outlines the methodological frameworks adopted in these systems and examines the resulting improvements in traffic flow, incident detection, crime prevention, and emergency response. Additionally, the study highlights ethical, technological, and infrastructural challenges that accompany the deployment of such technologies, including concerns about surveillance, privacy, algorithmic bias, and system scalability. The discussion also presents potential solutions and future directions, such as the use of edge computing and privacy-preserving AI models. Ultimately, this paper underscores the transformative potential of AI and CV in advancing the smart city agenda while calling for careful, ethical, and inclusive deployment practices.
