Abstract | The increasing environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastics has spurred significant interest in biodegradable polymers as a sustainable alternative. This paper reviews the advancements in biodegradable polymer chemistry, focusing on their types, production processes, applications, and environmental impact in the Indian context. A comprehensive analysis of key biodegradable polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) reveals their potential to replace conventional plastics in various sectors, including packaging and agriculture. The study employs a qualitative review of published research, examining their biodegradability, environmental benefits, and the challenges faced in their widespread adoption. Despite the promising properties of biodegradable polymers, challenges such as inconsistent degradation in various environmental conditions and the competition for agricultural resources pose barriers to their full-scale implementation. Additionally, the regulatory framework in India, including the Plastic Waste Management Rules, plays a critical role in shaping the market dynamics and adoption of these materials. The paper highlights the need for better policy enforcement, public awareness, and research into more sustainable production methods. Future directions include enhancing biodegradation rates in diverse environments, developing scalable and cost-effective production technologies, and addressing the ecological impact of raw materials used in biodegradable polymer manufacturing. Overall, biodegradable polymers hold significant promise for mitigating plastic pollution, provided that environmental, economic, and regulatory challenges are addressed effectively. |
