Abstract | Concrete, the world's most consumed construction material after water, faces an existential challenge: the rapid depletion of suitable sand resources. This paper examines the current state of global sand scarcity, its impact on concrete production, and emerging technological solutions. Methods of sand substitution, alternative binding materials, and novel concrete formulations are evaluated for their viability in addressing this crisis. The results indicate that a multifaceted approach combining recycled materials, manufactured sand, biologically inspired concrete, and engineered geopolymers offers the most promising path forward. This paper proposes an integrated framework for transitioning the concrete industry toward sustainable practices while maintaining the material performance necessary for infrastructure development. |
