Breaking the Silence: Healthcare Disparities Faced by Persons with Disabilities

Abstract | Access to healthcare constitutes a fundamental human right. Nonetheless, the healthcare requirements of individuals with impairments continue to go unaddressed. This issue arises not just from the typical challenges to access encountered by individuals with disabilities but also from the prevailing notion that resources do not equate to tangible advantages for these individuals. Consequently, states frequently exhibit reluctance to sufficiently allocate resources and prioritise healthcare access for those with impairments. This engenders significant apprehensions regarding equity and justice in healthcare accessibility. This study initially presents an explanation of equality and non-discrimination in healthcare access for those with disabilities from a utilitarian standpoint, drawing on the writings of Mark Stein. I examine the current laws and policies in India that influence healthcare access for those with disabilities and propose enhancements to increase their access to healthcare services. |
