ASEAN’s Response to Myanmar’s Coup: Norms, Non interference

| Abstract | The 2021 military coup in Myanmar has posed significant challenges to the regional order, while placing The Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) at a critical juncture. While the organization traditionally adhered to it principal of “ ASEAN Way”, which are build on the idea’s of non- interference, quite diplomacy, and consensus based decision making, these very norms now have acted as a hindrance for the ASEAN to properly deal with the crisis among its members state. The Study examines ASEAN’s diplomatic responses, including the adoption of the five point consensus, the decision to exclude Myanmar’s junta from the high level meetings and the broader geopolitical implication of the crisis. The paper highlights ASEAN”s structural weaknesses, particularly the absence of enforcement mechanism and divergent interests of members which have acted as a hindrance, additionally the role of external factors such as China and Russia is also explored as their support for the junta has further complicated the mediation process efforts by the ASEAN countries. The study argues that ASEAN must adopt more flexible decision making processes, enforce stronger accountability measures, and work with global actors to maintain its relevance in regional governance. Without structural reforms ASEAN risks diminishing its credibility as stabilizing force in Southeast Asia Keywords- ASEAN, Myanmar, military coup, non interference. |
