| Abstract | The rapid permeation of digital platforms into the informal economies of the Global South is reshaping traditional retail landscapes. This comprehensive review synthesizes contemporary academic literature on the digital transformation of informal retail—encompassing nanostores, kiranas, and warungs. Examining the shifts in business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce distribution, logistics optimization, consumer patronage, and cross-border trade, the paper highlights the complex operational realities of these markets. Crucially, the review critically analyzes the socio-economic impacts of algorithmic governance, arguing that platformization does not necessarily formalize traditional retail but rather institutionalizes existing informality through digital control. Finally, the paper outlines vital policy implications concerning data sovereignty, digital inclusion, and the development of open network models. |
