Abstract This study provides an extensive analysis of trade wars focusing on the causes, the consequences as well as the macroeconomic implications for international trade and global financial markets. The tools and the policies used during trade wars, the stages of trade wars, key macroeconomic transmission channels and core macroeconomic indicators are examined. The most significant trade wars in the world in terms of the impact they had on global economy are also reviewed in order to offer an empirical perspective. Evaluating the causes and the consequences of trade wars helps identify vulnerabilities and fragilities of countries severely affected by trade wars. Understanding the dynamics of trade wars and their implications for the global financial system plays a key role in designing macroeconomic and financial policies that create strong and stable economies.
